Malice
was a fanzine published by Chris Phinney from December 1982 to January 1985 and was the root from which the Harsh Reality Music cassette label grew.

I have scanned and uploaded all nine issues of Malice to the HalTapes website.
In Part 2 of my intro to Malice Fanzine you can preview issues 6 through 9.
Below each zine cover I have pasted clippings of my personal favorite parts.
Click on the zine covers below to view the complete zine issues.
I urge you to check out the full zine issues themselves
because there are lots of historic news and info items.

So Hal touched on a lot of things I would by experimental artists & home tapers, I will touch base on some of the heavy hardcore things you may like if into that. #6 had great stuff on No Trend, Panther Burns, Interviews with Battalion of Saints, Suicidal Tendencies.
# 7 had a Necros interview, Killing Children interview, & Circle Jerks live review. If you don't know it Keith Morris Circle Jerks lead singer was the original singer for Black Flag & if my memory is correct Scott Colburn a collaborator with Hal as Jabon was in Killing Children,.
# 8 UK Subs live, Jody Fosters Army live, Corrosion of Conformity interview, Negative Approach live.
# 9 the last issue Black Flag live, Sam Hain live, & 45 Grave live, of which ex Germs member Don Bolles played drums, after Darby Crash of Germs died. So theirs a brief summary of the hardcore spectrum.

Yo Chris, yes, that is correct that Scott Colburn (aka Jabon) was in Killing Children!

Was this the fanzine that of Glen Danzig by not wanting to negative reviews? You told me about that a long time ago, it’s still pretty funny. I keep imagining Glen stomping his tiny feey like Ceasar in the Asterix comics

Yes Ditlev Danzig wanted negative reviews, said we should have em his only complaint, lol, why were we or I going to spend money on negative reviews, made more sense to us or me to review things you liked.

Great to see these now available again. As far as we've come since the days of xeroxed fanzines I would never want us to forget our origins, and how the zines and cassette culture lead us into the current era of internet, instant audio transfers, and all the other advantages. Great to see this again; great job, Hal!

Tom,

Xeroxed, offset print, cassette culture, yes we have come a long way, thanks for contributing to the zine again from way back then & the trades we used to do, been listening to your current stuff & it's highly enjoyable by the way, in case I forgot to comment: magnifico as always.

Nice work again! Reading these reviews reminds me that I need to rediscover some of these releases. It's difficult to remember what is actually in my collection. I have caught myself buying stuff that I already have a couple of times. For some reason I was never able to get hold of any Human Flesh albums. Seems they sold out quick. Also, as I became a NWW fan, it became difficult to grab their stuff at times. Didn't like paying high prices to find out what I thought was an album was only an EP. Glad to see these issues become available.

Phil,

Glad you are enjoying again. Double check your collection, yes buying what one thought was a lp only to find out it was a ep was indeed a chapper. Enjoy my friend!

Hal, thank you for another great selection from Malice and thanks again to Chris for doing the work and putting it out there back in the day. This selection contains a review of Bliss Blast in Malice #6. When working on the GOF project, I had forgotten to mention him. He made some really heavy noise with some heavy topics back in the early '80's in SF. I didn't get the chance to meet him until late '80's right before he and his wife moved to LA. A really nice, sweet guy.

Leslie,

Ahh glad you like, thanks to Hal again, this all came about just with a interview about some cassettes, so glad Bliss Blast review, made you go back in time! :)

LOVE LOVE LOVE the graphix, and while I never got a copy of MALICE when they came out (I lived in Korea at the time), I sure would have enjoyed it then. The cover art, in particular, is fantastic. The many reviews were like a time machine back into the DIY years.

I have been making my own homemade experimental music since 1981.

I was an active participant in the 1980s Cassette Culture scene, and I operated the Cause And Effect Cassette Distribution Service and label, and recorded solo as Dog As Master, and in a duo as Viscera.

I published six issues of the original Electronic Cottage print magazine, 1989-91.

In the last 44 years I have recorded, produced and released more than 300 solo audio works, collaborations and compilations.
