In early 1998 I received a CD review submission to my Aural Innovations space rock zine. It was the 1995 released Creavolution album by Magic Moments At Twilight Time (MMATT). The review appeared in issue #3 and to this day it’s a favorite of all the submissions I received and I continue to stand by my assessment of it as the best space rock ‘n’ roll dance party sci-fi concept album I’ve ever heard. The CD had been submitted to me by Mick Magic, who from 1987 to 2003 released a whopping 597 cassettes and two CDs on his Music & Elsewhere (M&E) label. Mick continued to submit cool M&E tapes and we have remained in contact ever since. Fast forward to the present and Mick is still active making music as Magic Bullet and also hosting his monthly Radioshow To The Stars broadcast. One of a quartet of shows on Don Campau’s KOWS Radio Summit, Radioshow To The Stars broadcasts the first Saturday of each month at 7pm Pacific Time on kowsfm.com. The other shows are…
Organizer Don Campau is a homemade music veteran of many decades and his own No Pigeonholes show (now called No Pigeonholes EXP) has been broadcasting since 1985. Don is a recording and broadcasting legend! Mick provides some Radioshow To The Stars history: “The show started life as Dr. Magic’s Audio Lab in November 2023, named after a file on my PC where I kept my collection of sound recordings for studio use. Problem being, I’d forgotten where I’d nicked the name for the file in the first place – Dr. 13’s Audio Lab - which was Terry Burke’s old show. So, I contrived this plot where the ‘real’ Dr. Magic returned, cross that I’d used ‘his’ name for the show, so he went back in time in his Ford Escortron (with Shona Moments, played by the original 1980s MMATT singer) and caused a butterfly to flutter its wings, thus changing the present.” Mick continues, explaining the show themes: “Every edition is kind of like a concept compilation album, with a large contingent of radio theatre. As I always describe it: An aural experience for those who like their music from the fringes and wished they lived on a spaceship.” The shows have a recurring cast of ‘crew characters’…
Mick has more in development but that’s the current core crew. Of the handful of recent episodes I listened to the October 4th show is particularly fun. Titled ‘Beam Me Up, Scotty’, it incorporates Star Trek styled transmissions and Stuart Hamilton playing Mr. Scott (a real Scotsman!). All this loosely takes place in between a ‘normal’ radio show playlist, featuring an outstanding assortment of goodies from the underground. Regarding the structure of the show Mick says: “I shortlist tracks from everything I’ve got in, then thread the story together backed on the titles and artist names.”
Another one with great music and lots of subtly zany humor is the November 2nd ‘Dark Life (A Halloween Tale In Space)’ episode. The playlist includes outstanding artists from the underground, plus Mick and crew keep things fun with their Star Trek styled narrative taking the place of the usual DJ banter. Being well acquainted with Indian cuisine, I laughed when Dr. Faatimah Patel made a crack about having had too many lassis (a non-alcoholic drink). If you appreciate unusual rock, space, electronic, experimental music from the underground, check out Radioshow To The Stars for music served up in a less than conventional format. I think Mick is on to something! NOTE: Radioshow To The Stars also recently started broadcasting on Garry Lee’s Starship Overflow radio. CLICK HERE for full schedule.
