information for EC Splits project partners
Please bookmark this page so that you can easily refer back to it.
I have chosen you two Electronic Cottage Community friends as partners in the EC Splits project. Please communicate with each other throughout the process of creating your split album, and help each other. Even though your album is a split, please make it a cooperative effort.
You can consult the original project introduction and guidelines here:
https://www.electroniccottage.org/ec-splits.html
Below you will find all of the information that you need for the EC Splits project.
Please read all of the information below carefully and thoroughly. Much of it is basic stuff that you already know, but I have tried to explain the project procedures in more detail for your benefit.

Most of you are probably familiar with the concept of a split release. For those of you who are not familiar with split releases, I like to explain it this way: If your split album was on a cassette, all of one artist's music would be on one side of the tape, and all of the other artist's music would be on the other side of the tape. Also, a split is like a compilation with only two artists.
AUDIO
Each of you should separately record 30 minutes of new music, audio art, or noise, created specifically for this project. This is not a collaboration in the usual sense. Your sounds will not be combined with the sounds of the other artist in the split.
Please record almost exactly 30 minutes, please — no less than 29 minutes and no more than 31 minutes.
I want your very best work only. Take your time and do it right. Make it an instant classic! There is no need to be in a rush. You can take as long as three months to complete the project. It is my hope that it will not take that long. A month seems more reasonable to me. Please be in constant communication with your split partner throughout the course of the project and keep them informed of your progress.
The final project deadline will be Monday, November 2, 2020.
After that date I will not accept any materials for the project.
After you have recorded your 30 minutes, I suggest that you share your recordings with your split partner. Decide between yourselves which partner's recordings will be first on the album and which partner's recordings will be second on the album.
Send your recordings to me via WeTransfer or Google Drive.
I will also accept your sounds on a CDR.
At the time that you send your recordings please include exact information including the names of the artists and the titles of the tracks.
You can send your stuff to me today, tomorrow, the next day, next week, next month, whenever it is ready, but please, well before November 2, 2020.
Recordings must be in WAV file format.
No other file format will be accepted, no exceptions.
Submit recordings that follow these basic CD-quality WAV file specifications:
sample size: 16 bit
bit rate: 1,411 kbps
sample rate: 44.100 kHz
stereo
PLEASE AVOID INFRINGING ON ANYONE ELSE'S COPYRIGHT
This request is not based on ethical concerns,
but on practical concerns.
These split albums will be housed on my Bandcamp sites.
I do not want all six of my Bandcamp sites to be penalized, suspended, shut down, removed, or deleted because you use someone else's copyrighted materials without their permission.
When in doubt, don't do it!

ALBUM ARTWORK
You should collaborate with your split partner to create the artwork for your split album.
You can create a design which blends and combines images from both of you.
Or you can create a design whose space is equally divided with images from both partners, with the image split down the middle with one partner's art on the left and the other partner's art on the right.
The names of the artists and the words "EC Split" must be on the album art.
Art should perfectly square
1400 x 1400 pixels minimum
.jpg, .gif or .png, 10MB max
Artwork should be high resolution and high quality, please. Use the largest, most detailed, most pixel-rich visual files possible.
I want your album artwork to look good!
Send a high resolution JPG or PNG file to me via email, WeTransfer, or Google Drive.
If it is too difficult for you to make the album artwork you can send images to me and I will construct the album cover artwork for you.

PUBLICATION
I will upload your audio and visual files to Bandcamp and I will create the online split album for you. I will upload your album to and store it on my personal Bandcamp site, but all EC Splits albums will be displayed at the Electronic Cottage index page at Bandcamp:
https://electroniccottage.bandcamp.com/indexpage
Each split partner will be entitled to five free download codes of your album to share with friends, fans, journalists, DJs, and podcasters. I will distribute free download codes only upon request, because some people do not want or need them. If you need more than five free download codes in order to promote your split album, let me know.
There is the possibility that I will be able to pay royalties to the artists for purchased downloads. After Bandcamp and PayPal fees are deducted the money will be split three ways: one-third for each artist on the split, and one-third for me and EC. One-third after fees is approximately $0.24-$0.25 out of every dollar. Artists can decline to accept royalties in advance or can donate any royalties back to EC.
Please do not publish the music for your split album elsewhere ONLINE, such as your own websites, Soundcloud, ReverbNation, Internet Archive, YouTube, Bandcamp, etc. until February 1, 2021.
You own the copyrights of your audio and visual art.
Electronic Cottage owns the online publication rights until February 1, 2021.
I encourage you to share your split album with radio shows and podcasts.
Artists will have the option to produce hard copies of their own splits to sell and trade, based upon mutual agreement and cooperation between the two artists, starting any time after the album's publication by me on Bandcamp.
