North Carolina Disc One

First recordings made at Bret Hart's home. Goff had brought along several instruments & fx. Bret has tons of exotic & unusual acoustic & electronic instruments. Scotty Irving joined in on these sonic improvisations. They also recorded more sonic soundscapes at the Elsewhere Artist Collaborative. Brian Dunsmore joined in to play some Sonics as well. A great disc full of sonic mayhem. Some of the tracks were recorded by Benny Johnson also.

Bret & Goff did some more sonic improvisations joined by Ed Shepherd, some great music! The next day the two recorded at a abandoned cotton mill & at the site of what once was a calcium carbide factory. The two beat out & scraped out some very industrial sounding improv's. More improv of sonic proportion was recorded later at Bret's home. Some very great music indeed!

Charles flew to Atlanta & was picked up at the airport there by Hal McGee who drove up from Gainesville.

Goff unloaded all his equipment he brought with him: tiny Casio, Barbie violin, ukulele & other things. Hal McGee played his Moog Voyager & Dave Fuglewicz played his Arp 2600. Total improvisations. Four tracks of sonic proportion & mayhem that delved into unexplored territory way beyond where man has been. A mind bending blend of sonic ear candy!

Three tracks.
First one from the evening before with Hal, Dave & Goff recorded On Goff's video camera. This is the soundtrack from the video, ultra sonic goodness.   Second recording was done on microcassette recorder while the three were having lunch called "That's Disgusting" in reference to Hal’s burger I believe, recorded at the Table 1280 restaurant. Lots of topics in this discussion excellent piece of micro.        Track three "Press Record, Press to Play" recorded on Goff's digital camera. Dave was getting ready for a Tapegerm internet sonic live show, so Goff & Hal employed some instruments & non instruments & a reading by Goff from a religious publication Charles found on the ground that day. A very wild & crazy improvisational piece indeed.

What can I say?

Bat recordings, forgotten cameras, micro cassette recordings, the Octave Cat synth, Andrew Chadwick provided pre-recorded sounds, all mixed into a sonic stew of epic proportions. Coupled with the electric piano, tons of fx and the kora.
This disc is one sonic exploration of very creative improv that blows your mind. Five explorations of sonic madness! A musical stew one definitely needs to hear. Don't take my word for it just strap on your ear goggles & try it on for yourself!

The final leg of the tour.

Over the next three days Goff & Phinney recorded in Phinney's tiny but functional studio. All improvisational pieces, Eight recordings in three days. Phinney mixed them into four tracks. Used in these recordings were Goff's full battery of instruments he brought with him & Phinney's collection of synths, guitars, radios & other devices. This gave them a lot to work with to record these pieces of unique sonic madness. Two pieces of a sonic blend on this disc plus a piece Goff captured on micro cassette.

The tours Phinney took Goff on in Memphis had a strong influence on these recordings. Two more mixes of wild sonic experimentation plus a humorous collage of readings from the fence in front of Graceland that Goff recorded on his micro cassette recorder. These were the final recordings of the tour!

Brilliant!

There should be more curated paths through his work. Even me knowing his work since the 80s .. I'm totally lost when visiting the 300+ Charles Rice Goff III archive at archive.org.

Thanks Chris for the special attention, and to both you and Hal for piecing this all together so nicely! Both of you, your families, and all of the other participants and their families, so many people -- made this whole thing work out as well as it did. ALSO, something that I could not find online years ago when I cooked up the Taped Rugs 06 06 page, Jerry Kranitz did a big Aural Innovations interview/feature on the tour. I just did a little digging around, and I've found it online here:
http://www.aural-innovations.com/issues/issue35/charls12.html
I'll be adding this link to the Taped Rugs page real soon too. "Community" -- that's what makes it all worthwhile!

Ha! Well, I see now that I already DO have a link to Jerry's interview on the page. That appointment with the eye doctor is clearly overdue, and maybe a trip to the brain surgeon as well is in order for me... Anyway -- I encourage anyone interested in factoids about any of the participants involved in this project to check that interview out too -- especially people who are not familiar with Jerry -- he's one of the greatest chroniclers of sonic art out there.

I used to run Harsh Reality Music, started the label in 1982 releasing my own music in various groups. They were Mental Anguish, Pungent Odor who became The Skoptzies, Misfeasance, Macroglossia, RSVP which became Cancerous Growth, Viktimized Karcass, Planet Zero.

Anyway I started releasing tapes by artists that I liked. Over 350 tapes, some vinyl, CDs, CD-Rs, and videos on VHS. Also did distribution of some LPs. Did some writing for mags, some mail art, I did a lot of compilations as well.

Helped run Tapegerm with Bryan Baker, Scott Carr & J Mundok, for 10 years or more, a collaborative site too intense to explain here.

Had my own domain for HRM, shut down the label due to several reasons around 2006 if memory serves.

You can see some of the releases on Hal’s site, the HRM section. Quit Tapegerm around 2010.

Took a 5 year hiatus due to personal reasons but came out of it & did Mental Anguish - Frozen Lake & a few Phinney/McGee microcassette releases.

I have collaborated extensively with Hal McGee, Carl Howard - Nomuzic, Mike Jackson, plus others Prescott, Jeff Central, Charlie Goff, John Hudak, Minóy, Alien Planetscapes, Lord Litter, Don Campau, Angwana which was with Al Margolis hence the name, Pat Grafik, Isaac Ersoff, & a CD-R with a PDF comic book by Matt Howarth released on his label!
