PANOPLY~ the tape germ mixes

Panoply was the first in 4 releases I did with the crew at Tape Germ, a site for interactive music making run by Bryan Baker and Chris Phinney. People would upload loops and other folks would download these loops and mix them, cut them up, add to them, etc. and make pieces out of them.  Then, they would upload them and share them back with the Tape Germ community. It was a lot of fun and those guys did a lot of work on this ground breaking project

At the time I did not possess a computer program for creating and cutting and pasting tracks so I had to use a novel method of recording the loops and using a minidisc player to play them by hand with the remote control in a live fashion. I would also add my own instruments and layer the various loops using this minidisc method.

Don, thank you for posting and sharing Panoply with us. It was great to sit and listen and experience it this morning. Groundbreaking is right! It also shows how collaborative work can make for some beautiful sounds. Kudos to all involved!

Tape Germ! Much thanks to the hard work of Chris and Bryan, this site was once a genuine nexus for uniquely creative endeavors. It highlighted the talents of many current E. Cottage visitors and a whole lot of other audio artistes as well.

As for Don's contributions... his one-of-a-kind technological approach to incorporating Tape Germ's samples into his collages got my repeated attention for sure. I am the proud possessor of all 4 of his Tape Germ - related albums (this one, Jungle of Misunderstanding, Countervail, Through The Black Forest), and after seeing this post, I dug all of these disks out of my Campau collection, and will be splashing their contents through my ears in the coming days.

Thanks much Mr. DC for bringing renewed attention to Panoply.

10 plus yrs running the TG site, J Mundok quit after 6 months, Scott Carr & I quit as burnt out from running it, not making music. Bryan still has the domain its very inactive, looks totally different & just him Running it. Anyways thats beside the point Don was a wonderful member who always surprised with some great music. This cd is freaking awesome so good to listen to. I love reading the methods you used Don for your mixes, you my friend were a very integral part of the sound of the group. This cd is part of the proof in the pudding. I might add Don was a guest artist at TG & a cd is available at archive.org of The Don Campau guest artist projecct where we all took Dons samples, loops & wrote some cool tracks with them & other things. I suggest a listen. TG is a story in itself & a long one that my need to be a article history of thing one day, My track on Dons guest mix cd is " Lengua & Barbacoa" remember that one Don? Damn I need to hear your other TG mix cds. Great article Don!

One of the best collaborative projects I've known you to do, Don. And you did a spectacular job considering you didn't have the advantages of computer mixing and editing. It's great that you're making these Tape Germ releases available again today.
