Hal McGee's Hands painting

When I photograph performers who are minimalist in their actions, I like to focus on the details. Their hands, their gear, where they put their feet. Hal McGee has very expressive hands, and on many occasions I have photographed them while teasing a theremin or twiddling a knob.
On 12/30/2011, while visiting from Oakland, CA, I photographed Hal's performance at Action Research #79 at the Laboratory in Gainesville, FL. Most of the photos I took that night were focused on his hands, playing a Noise Synth Box (created by Travis Johnson, a variation on the Atari Punk Console).
Recently I created a painting commemorating our 12-year friendship, seen here, titled appropriately "Hal McGee's Hands". I wrapped an old piece of found wood in aluminum foil, then glued veneer from an abandoned house to one side, allowing the silver to peek through cracks and small holes and catch light. I used a photo from the Action Research #79 performance as reference. I considered showing details on the box, but this painting was not about the box, it was about the hands that play it.

Lovely painting, Jen! The next best thing to Hal Mcgee’s actual hands, but he needs them to stay on the end of his arms!

Cool painting! I love it that you recycled the wood to paint on and it's a great picture of Hal also.

There can be no greater gift than art of such a personal kind.
