John Wiggins — BALTIC Film 1 (2018)

In the spirit of Luc Ferrari’s “Far West News”, I recorded everywhere I went on a Baltic Cruise, August 2018. I recorded over 4 hours of sounds in Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia and Amsterdam and edited out and used the sounds that brought to mind the strongest memories. I then preceded, film style, to make a “dialog only” track – just voices, speaking, of which I had many. Also recorded in all these countries were musicians playing outside. From a variety of them I made a “music only” track. Then of course a “sound effects” track from all the unexpected sounds you find, everywhere, when you push record. There is an endless supply of sounds in our world. Mixed together I created “BALTIC Film 1” – a movie for the ears made from the sound up.

Love the stereo mix on this. Kinda got a Nurse With Wound vibe to it. Dig it!

nice collage! Is that one of your cousins sitting beside you on the bench? He's got a nice smile.

This is really beautiful. I’ve listened to it with and without headphones and it’s a treat all the way through and sounds so dang good!

Thanks Jeremy - I record everything in M/S Stereo. It lets me have 3 tracks for every sound sample I mangle and I'm always amazed at how many "new" sound objects I can make this way - and it's in stereo! thanks again for listening.

Do you mind if I ask what recorder you use for this? The sound is great.

Hey Jeremiah - I record outside with a Zoom H6 96K using a Shure V88 Stereo mic. In my studio I use a Neauman 147 tube condenser, cardiod with a WARM WA - 14 figure of eight. Avalon and SPL pre's into ProTools 96K 32bit. Believe me I record a ton that doesn't sound great, I feel like you gotta just get lucky. I jumped up to record something outside once and I put my coffee cup on the sink, and it teettered, you know it rocked back and forth - bang! THAT was the sound that got recorded. You never know.

Thanks Amoraim! I feel like recording real sounds and places is like an endless source of mysteries to me. I’m always listening.
