Ken Clinger's First-Ever Cassette On July's MAGNETIC BUNGALOW

7/3/2018

Whether you're familiar with the enigmatic and prolific Ken Clinger or not, this installment of Magnetic Bungalow will provide revelations, history, and entertainment. Ken is still making albums today, which still retain some of the elements that he unveiled to the world in his first cassette release, 35 years ago. Yesteryear's Ken Clinger cassette albums truly showcase the Lo Fi beauties of home recording, and KC.01 is a genuine classic.

Thanks C3. I became a Ken Clinger fan only a few years ago. I immediately recognized the genius of this man. His first release will be a joy to enjoy.

Great show Swami Loopynanda, I enjoyed it very much. Nice to find out more about Mr.Clinger and his working methods.
And since there's way more material... who knows there will be a second part one of these...

Another excellent MAGNETIC BUNGALOW program, Swami! I learned a lot about Ken and his music by listening to this program. I am always happy to be educated about the work of my peers. Thanks for explaining in detail the various Clinger series (KC, KCM, KCX, KCollab, etc.). I would like to point listeners toward an index of all of Ken's recordings available on Bandcamp, all neatly arranged - https://kenclinger.bandcamp.com/music - It's great to be able to see the layout of Ken's available online catalog all on one page. Very helpful for getting a grasp of the scope of his output.

Glad to be able to call attention to Mister Clinger, thanks to all who tuned in! Regards Hal's pointing out of Ken's discography -- there are actually several albums that Mister C. has not released on Bandcamp... Here's a list of releases he made between 1983-2003:

Awesome show Unkie Rugs! I've not heard nearly as much Ken Clinger as I should. Love his twisted take on Hey Bulldog!!

I was wondering when the Cottage-scenti were going to get around to singing the praises of the amazing Ken Clinger! A diehard troubadour of our movement and a true artist!! Thank you Swami....

It's so nice that you featured Ken's very first tape, a tape I believe I called "colors" for the purpose of my radio setlist because of its lack of any identification other than a couple of colored smudges, blue on one side of the tape and pink on the other, and Ken may have suggested that title in his correspondence, though I'm not sure. (No 001 at that time!) I never focused on this tape exclusively for an entire show as you just have, but I did play several of its pieces one or multiple times. One you didn't get to was "Isnowing" which I especially liked to play when it was, in fact, snowing!

Here's a couple of related anecdotes about that tape and my experience with it. I'm not sure how I initially interacted with Ken, but my best guess is that I saw some mention of him in some zine with his address and I reached out to him (as they say nowadays! we never said that back then!) to ask if I could have some of what I'd read about for my radio show. I recall that he warned me in a letter that I may not find his music "as extreme as (I) was used to" (seems to be a recurring concern, maybe paranoia?, among the less extreme or harsh sounding cassette musicians of the time!). Of course I loved his music and as I've said aired pieces off the tape frequently. Interestingly and maybe ironically, I was once talking to a listener to my show who said all that noisy, extreme stuff I played was okay, but what he REALLY liked on my show was stuff like -- and he quoted some lines from Stella and Humpo!! So hey, how about THEM cows?!?

Oh, and this may have been implied in my prior comment, but my copy of Ken's first tape looks MUCH different from what you're showing up above! From the art and the name you give, I wouldn't know it was the same tape, but you've clearly played stuff that's on my copy!

Mister Fyodor -- nice to read your anecdotes and revelations. I just dug through my emails, and I came up with this Clinger quote that might help in unraveling the mystery of your different-looking tape... Quotes Ken:

"Since I've (at least theoretically) kept everything "in print", when I'd run out of copies of a certain cassette, it was often easier to make a new cover (if a copy machine wasn't handy, if I had a computer printer available, etc.). I was never seriously dedicated to the visual aspect of cassette or CDR releases. Tho CDR covers have pretty much stabilized since computer graphics became fairly easily convertible between different software programs."
