Great show, Charles, and thanks so much for playing that old track of mine! Thanks, especially, for your lengthy intro/bio/blurb about me. I really appreciate the fact that you went the extra mile, not only in doing some research, but in getting all the details correct! So many people, if they look anything up at all, get everything mixed up, mispronounce my name, etc. You were spot on!

Sorry none of my Super-8 films are online. A lot of my films involved "live/performed" elements (superimpositions of multiple reels, live soundtracks, loops, etc.) so I never felt video versions did them justice. It's also somewhat difficult and costly to transfer Super-8 to video (unless you go the cheap route and just shoot off the wall/screen which tends to look crappy). I would like to have at least some of those films online, though. It's something I am thinking about.

Good good good to know that I received a passing grade on my homework here, thanks for the positive reinforcement. I encourage you to get at least one of those old films digitized for sharing with the world -- but I do understand how art can lose some of its power when formats are changed too. Perhaps one day you could arrange a public showing of some of the films and videorecord the entire event? Whatever happens, your Soundtracks cassette is a wonderful collection of audio -- all on its own.

Another excellent Deprogramming Center! My personal favorite parts were Swami's intro and the W.A.Davison material, which was top-notch. The Clinger and Segal material was excellent as well, fitting together so well with each other that I couldn't tell where one ended and the other began.

Swami, I really enjoyed your show and how thoughtfully it was put together and presented. I was very happy to get the chance to hear one of William’s pieces.

William, I agree with your comment about the expense and difficulty of transferring Super 8 to video. I’ve encountered the same issues even with silent 3 minute small films. Were any of your films ever screened at the San Francisco Cinematheque? In the 1980’s they were big supporters of small gauge films and filmmaking.

And it is always wonderful to hear somthing from Hal McGee!

Ah... so nice to get some attention from a fellow Bay Areartist -- many thanks for the positive reinforcement, Ms Singer! 'Tis always a pleasure to share artworks that inspire, and even more of a pleasure to know that they inspire others too.

Thanks, Leslie! Would have been nice to have had a screening in San Francisco, or anywhere else for that matter! But my Super-8 films were never shown outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia where I was living when I started making films, and in Toronto where I've been living since the late 80s. I LOVED working in Super-8 back in the day! Such a fun medium. But one of the big problems with it was/is the fact that it's really difficult to make duplicate prints (or transfers to video, digital, etc. as already mentioned). It's not impossible, but it's not easy and can be expensive. What that means is that most people who work in Super-8 or Regular 8mm film end up screening their original prints! I did it for years here in Toronto and consider myself lucky that only one or two minor damages have occurred. Sending out original, only-copy-in-existance films to festivals or screening venues was not an option. I suppose I could have travelled with my films but neither the money, nor the opportunities presented themselves. Fortunately, I started producing work in video fairly early on and those pieces did get screened at various festivals and events.

I really DO need to make some copies of those old Super-8 films though and get at least a few online!
